If you’ve read Night Buddies, you already know that the Iguana Gang makes quite the splash. But what about real iguanas? These fascinating reptiles possess some remarkable features. Let’s dive in and learn a little more about the real-life inspiration behind these characters!
1. They’re Excellent Climbers
Iguanas love to hang out high up in trees. Their sharp claws and strong legs help them grip branches, and they can move surprisingly fast when they need to.
2. They Can Swim, Too!
Not only do iguanas rule the trees, but many species are also excellent swimmers. The marine iguana of the Galápagos Islands can even dive into the ocean to feed on seaweed!
3. Their Tails Are Powerful
An iguana’s long tail helps with balance, but it can also act as a defense tool. If threatened, an iguana might use its tail like a whip to scare off predators.
4. They Love Warm Weather
Iguanas are cold-blooded, which means they rely on the sun to regulate their body temperature. You’ll often find them basking in the sun to stay at just the right temperature.
5. They Have a “Third Eye”
Well, sort of. Iguanas have a special scale on top of their heads called a parietal eye. It doesn’t look like a normal eye, but it can detect changes in light and help warn them of predators from above.
6. They’re Herbivores
Despite their sometimes grumpy faces, iguanas are mostly peaceful plant-eaters. They enjoy a diet of leaves, fruits, and flowers.
No wonder the Iguana Gang makes for such interesting characters—real iguanas are full of surprises, too!
