School’s out, the days are long, and eventually the novelty wears off. If you’ve heard “I’m bored” more times than you can count, it might be time for a new kind of adventure—one powered by imagination, not screens.

Here are seven fun, screen-free ways to help your kids turn an ordinary summer day into something extraordinary.

1. Plan a Backyard Treasure Hunt
Create a series of clues that lead to a small prize hidden somewhere in your house or yard. It could be a snack, a toy, or even the next clue in a homemade mystery. Bonus points for costumes and secret codes!
2. Design a Flying Machine
Using cardboard, string, and whatever supplies are lying around the house, challenge your kids to create a model of their own flying invention. Hold a mini “air show” to see whose creation can fly (or glide) the farthest. Check out our blog from a few weeks ago on how to build your own flying machine!
3. Try a Midnight Snack Taste Test
Host a silly snack-making session where kids combine unusual ingredients (within reason!) to invent the next great summer treat. Sweet, salty, and a little weird is encouraged.
4. Set Up an Obstacle Course
Build a challenge using cones, chairs, hula hoops, and anything else you have on hand. Make it a race, a timed mission, or a game of “don’t touch the lava”—the possibilities are endless.
5. Invent a Secret Code
Have your kids create their own alphabet or use symbols and colors to write hidden messages. Then trade notes and try to decode each other’s secrets. It’s a quiet activity that still feels like a mission.
6. Build a Reading Fort
Pull out some pillows and blankets, string up a few lights, and build the coziest reading nook in the house. Whether it’s for an afternoon escape or a nighttime story, forts make everything more fun.
7. Start an Adventure Journal
Encourage your kids to keep track of their summer missions, whether it’s sketches of their flying machines, maps of their treasure hunts, or just stories about their day. Let them decorate the pages however they want—stickers, stamps, snack crumbs—it all counts.

You don’t need a big trip or a fancy event to make summer feel magical. Sometimes all it takes is a little creativity and the freedom to explore, imagine, and invent. And if you’re looking for a little extra inspiration, a certain red crocodile might have a few ideas tucked away in the pages of Night Buddies.
