It’s not just time to celebrate the birthday of the United States (Happy 4th of July!)—it’s time to blow out fourteen candles for Night Buddies!

The very first Night Buddies Adventure, Night Buddies and The Pineapple Cheesecake Scare, was released in the summer of 2012.

It all started with night adventures by author Sands Hetherington and his son John. Together, they created Crosley and knew the friendly crocodile had to be red. They imagined the late-night programs that would entertain any kid not quite ready to go to sleep. Along the way, quirky NIght Buddy vocabulary emerged (Yerk! Yerk!), and readers, parents, and reviewers knew something fresh and entertaining was afoot.

The second Night Buddies adventure arrived in January 2013. In Night Buddies, Imposters, and One Far-Out Flying Machine, red crocs start popping up all over the city, creating confusion, committing crimes, and causing Crosley to go bananas at the sight of them.

In 2015, John and Crosley were back in Night Buddies Go Sky High and went all the way into the stratosphere in their racing blimp.

The most recent Night Buddies book, Night Buddies and Evil School Bus #264, arrived on bookshelves in October 2023. The iguanas are back to their stinky shenanigans. They’ve fitted out the flying school bus for real mischief and are marauding all over the Borough. They’ve really got it in for John and Crosley, who must sniff out their evildoings before it’s too late!

From the beginning, Night Buddies caught the attention of readers and reviewers with their quirky adventures. Here are some of our early reviews:

“Night Buddies is visionary, conceptual, and a forecast of fun for children and schoolteachers alike. Author Sands Hetherington with mastery unveils creativity with purpose, inventions in language, and makes reading fun.”
-Al Carrozza, author of Universal Enzyme

“Hetherington seems to have the right ingredients for a classic children’s whodunit—talking animals, an unsolved mystery and a brave hero willing to face unforeseen foes…”
-Kirkus Reviews

And the fun and magic have continued for fourteen years! Here’s one of our latest reader reviews:

Anything with the word shenanigan gets my attention. The Evil School Bus is the fourth installment of the Night Buddies series (and I hope it’s not the last). Full of action and silly antics, this book kept our attention throughout. Our main character, John, is a trouble magnet who can backtalk like no other. His trusty companion, Crosley, is a red crocodile who is afraid of water. Together with the blimp, they are out to save the city. If you haven’t read another Night Buddies, let me introduce you to the Iguana gang. They are mischievous fellows who drive a stink bomb bus. Now, that in itself is funny and will surely grab middle grader’s attention. In this story, they have cooked up another evil plan to terrorize. To keep the reader on their toes, there are bonuses such as artwork that helps drive the story and a goofy, made-up language. – Kim, five-star Amazon review.

So put some candles on a pineapple cheesecake and celebrate along with us!
