Today, Crenwinkle is here to share some top-secret info. He’ll show us three ways to create a secret code. The secret to secret codes is that both the sender and the recipient must agree on how the code works. Grab a pencil and paper, and get ready to learn this very important Night Buddies skill!

Extra letter code. This is a simple code to learn, but it will confuse any iguana who happens to find your secret message. Add an extra letter between each letter in your words. If Crenwinkle writes

CBA XN  YROCU  RHEOALD  TFHZIGS?

you would take out every other letter to decipher his message. He’s asking CAN YOU READ THIS?

Pro Tip: Use your paper and pencil to write down every other letter.

Numbers for letter code. In this code, you assign every letter a number and then write words using the numbers. The easiest form of this code is to start with  A – 1, B – 2, C – 3, etc. Let’s try it. Write down all the letters of the alphabet, then assign each a number from 1-26. That will be your key to deciphering this message from Crenwinkle:

9 ‘-13  13-15 -22-9-14-7   8-5-1-4-17-21-1-18-20-5-18-19  15-14   20-21-5-19-4-1-24.

Reverse Alphabet. This is another clever way to send secret messages. Write out the alphabet again. On the line below it, write the alphabet in reverse. It should look like this:
