John and Crosley the red crocodile on a Night Buddies Program

Meet John Degraffenreidt

John Degraffenreidt is the young adventurer at the center of the Night Buddies series. When bedtime arrives and John isn’t ready to sleep, a bright red crocodile named Crosley appears from under his bed and turns an ordinary night into something completely different. Together, John and Crosley sneak out after lights out and take on Programs – the Night Buddies word for adventures – throughout the Borough and beyond. John may begin the night sleepy, curious, or unsure what Crosley has gotten him into, but he becomes an active partner in solving mysteries, facing unusual villains, and getting the pair through one strange situation after another.

The Kid Who Isn't Ready for Bed

The Night Buddies adventures begin with a familiar problem: John isn’t ready to go to sleep. Instead of simply lying awake, he discovers Crosley beneath his bed and is introduced to a hidden nighttime world of Programs, gadgets, unusual characters, mysteries, and mischief. John gives readers a human point of view inside that world. He asks questions, reacts to Crosley’s ideas and language, helps investigate problems, and becomes increasingly comfortable with the strange logic of the Borough.

An Unlikely Nighttime Team

John and Crosley work as partners. Crosley knows the Night Buddies organization, the Borough, and Crenwinkle’s gadgets; John brings curiosity, common sense, and his own ideas to each Program.

  • Their friendship is the thread connecting every book in the series.
  • Crosley introduces John to the Night Buddies world.
  • John joins Crosley rather than simply watching the adventure happen.
  • They investigate mysteries and problems together.
  • Their dialogue and different personalities provide much of the series’ humor.
  • Each new Program builds on their friendship and shared history.

The Real John Behind the Character

Yes. The character grew out of author Sands Hetherington’s real son, John. Sands has explained that he put his son into the Night Buddies stories as the protagonist, while the real John contributed one of the series’ most important ideas: Crosley, the red talking crocodile.

The father-and-son bedtime storytelling eventually developed into the fictional adventures of John and Crosley. That origin gives the series an authentic family connection that can be linked to Sands’ About page and Crosley’s character page.

Why Doesn’t John Have a Middle Name?

John’s lack of a middle name comes from real life too. In Sands Hetherington’s public Q&A, he explains that his son genuinely does not have one and that he worked the family detail into the story
